What are the best virtual Instruments and Kontakt libraries for producing orchestral music?
Just a quick disclaimer before we get started: There are almost infinite choices when it comes to Kontakt libraries and VSTs for orchestral music. That’s why I have tried to pick the best and most popular ones here. Please understand that, if your favorite library is not listed here. I have also tried to consider as many different companies as possible.
Spitfire Audio has been a renowned source for years when it comes to contact libraries in the orchestral field. The libraries sound fantastic and are, like all Kontakt orchestral libraries listed here, on a very high professional level. Spitfire Audio has been working with a growing pool of well-known personalities in the composer and scoring scene, such as Hans Zimmer, for several years. This has resulted in outstanding collaborations that are unparalleled.
“Our most renowned orchestral sample library, Albion One is everything you need to make film music in one box. A 109-piece orchestra, accompanied by a thunderous cinematic percussion section, recorded at the world-famous Hall at AIR Studios London, plus warpable loops designed by award-winning engineers, and an enormous steam synthesizer. East West has been a leading manufacturer of virtual software instruments for over 30 years. The company has won various industry awards for all kinds of libraries, most recently Hollywood Choirs (NAMM TEC Award 2019). East West has been offering a subscription service for some time now, which allows you to afford the instruments even if you have a smaller budget. Subscriptions are available for as little as $20 per month and include almost all of the Kontakt libraries available to date. In addition to Hollywood Orchestra, the production team recently added Hollywood Solo Instruments which includes Hollywood Harp, Hollywood Solo Cello, and Hollywood Solo Violin. Hollywood Orchestra offers unprecedented control over the sound and the instruments, including up to 5 mic positions for all instruments, and is a must-have compositional tool for serious composers.”
“Recorded by 11-time Grammy nominated classical recording engineer Prof. Keith O. Johnson, the East West Symphonic Orchestra is the most awarded orchestral collection ever, including winning Sound On Sound’s Reader’s Choice Award an unprecedented 3-times, and the first orchestral collection to be recorded in a “state of the art” concert hall where orchestras mainly perform. To achieve the feel of a live concert hall performance, each instrument and section was recorded with three mic positions, close, stage (conductor‘s position) and hall. By selecting different mic positions, users can mix these sounds together to create any kind of natural ambiance their project requires. This eliminates the need for artificial reverb. The East West Symphonic Orchestra eclipses all others with the highest level of fidelity and realism.”
